By Kamal Khan With a commitment to humanitarian service, objective journalism, and social responsibility, a reception was held in Golapganj, Sylhet, in honor of the newly elected central leaders of the “Society of National Media Commission.” On the same occasion, Eid clothing was distributed among underprivileged and distressed people in the area ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha. The event was organized on Tuesday (May 26) at 3:00 PM at Golapganj Bazaar Choumuhani by the Golapganj branch of the Society of National Media Commission. The program was presided over by Sylhet divisional member of the organization Kamran Uddin Badal and jointly conducted by Jobayer Ahmed Surgeon and Md. Shihab Uddin. The chief guest was Golam Kibria Chowdhury Shahin, advisor of Sylhet District BNP and founding president of Golapganj Municipality BNP. Special guests who were felicitated at the event included the newly elected central president of the Society of National Media Commission, A K M Azizul Haque; General Secretary Kalimullah Iqbal; and Organizing Secretary Kamal Khan. Other speakers included Salik Ahmed Chowdhury, advisor of Sylhet District BNP and president of the “Sylhet to Sheola Four Lane Implementation Committee,” and Shahan Uddin Nazu, general secretary of the Sylhet district branch of the Society of National Media Commission. The Role of Journalists in Nation Building In his speech as chief guest, Golam Kibria Chowdhury Shahin said that the role of the media is extremely important in eliminating injustice from society and raising the voice of the oppressed. He praised the humanitarian and social activities of the organization and assured full support for its future progress. He also expressed pride and joy in being able to host the central leaders in Golapganj. Call for Journalism in Support of Truth and Humanity In response to the reception, central president A K M Azizul Haque said, “Journalism is not limited to reporting news; it is also our ethical responsibility to stand beside the helpless, deprived, and vulnerable people of society. The initiative to distribute clothing among the needy on the occasion of Eid is undoubtedly commendable.” He urged local journalists to practice responsible journalism based on truth and justice. General Secretary Kalimullah Iqbal said, “Fulfilling duties with honesty and integrity from one’s own position is true patriotism. Peace and human values in society can only be established through service.” He further added, “Journalists are the conscience of society and the vigilant guardians of the nation. If they fail to speak the truth, criminals will become stronger. Therefore, journalists must play a fearless role in the interest of the country and its people.” Smiles on the Faces of the Needy After Receiving Eid Gifts At the end of the discussion session, the guests distributed Eid gifts—new sarees, lungis, shirts, and panjabis—among several hundred underprivileged and distressed people of the area. The beneficiaries expressed joy and gratitude upon receiving the Eid items. Special thanks and appreciation were extended to UK-based expatriate Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, advisor of the Sylhet division of the Society of National Media Commission, for his overall support in making the event successful. The program was attended by divisional member of the organization M S Dalim, Iqbal Hossain, Abul Kalam, Hossain Ahmed, Kamrul Islam, Emad Uddin, journalist Abdul Ahad, Nizam Uddin, along with local dignitaries, media personnel, political leaders, and representatives of civil society.
